Welcome!

The Darwin Camera Club has a proud history of continuous activity and community involvement since it was first founded in 1947, making it one of the oldest photographic clubs in Australia.

Our Club is one of the Northern Territory’s key creative visual arts organisations whose focus is on promoting the art of photography throughout the region. Our members are made up of a vibrant community of local photographic enthusiasts and professionals keen to develop and share their creative endeavours in photography as an art form.

The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Our club nights are informal and held in an inviting and friendly atmosphere, where members can attend seminars and workshops, participate in local and interstate competitions and exchange information relating to photographic exhibitions, special projects, skills and techniques, equipment reviews, meet-ups, group outings and events.

Our monthly newsletter ‘Beyond the Lens’ provides members and visitors with up-to-date information on photography related topics.

Follow us on our Facebook page for announcements of upcoming competitions, events, workshops and trips.

Beyond the Lens – Jan ’24

Darwin Camera Club – Celebrating 76 years of supporting the Photography Community in Darwin and the NT.

The Darwin Camera Club has a proud history of continuous activity and community involvement since it was first founded in 1947, making it one of the oldest photographic clubs in Australia.

Looking back on this incredible journey, we are immensely proud of the work the club has performed in its evolution from post-war origins to the world of digital imagery, through the Covid-19 Pandemic to where we are now, in rebuilding the club and positioning it as the key photographic arts community organisation in the Northern Territory.

As we step into 2024, the enthusiasm within the Committee is apparent. This year promises to be nothing short of extraordinary, and we are thrilled to share the excitement with you.

We are also eager to hear what areas of Photography would you like to learn more about or see more of over the coming year. Please share your thoughts and we look forward to shaping the future together.

Here’s to an exciting year filled with creative growth and success for each one of you. We are confident that 2024 will be a year to remember, and we can’t wait to share the journey with you. Thank you for being a part of the Darwin Camera Club Story.

The Big Wet:

The wet season has also finally arrived in the Top End accompanied by incredible storms and sunsets, with waterfalls thundering and cascading throughout the region from Kakadu to the Kimberley and creating plunge pools and enchanting oasis of plant and animal life – both big and small. It really is a wonderfully dynamic time of year.

Club Committee:

Our committee members have been working tirelessly behind the scenes over the last couple of months in developing the club’s business plan and strategy to rebuild the club’s membership following the Covid-19 pandemic, and have created some amazing events for 2024. We’re all now gearing up to deliver on an exciting schedule of camera club nights and events over the year ahead.

I would like to say a special thank you to all committee members for their hard work in 2023, and we’re excited to be able to provide more incredible experiences, presentations and photography for members in 2024.

Our club relies on the incredible work that committee members do – everything from looking after memberships and finances, to website design and social media accounts and administration, organising and running the Darwin Show Photo Competition, to organising presenters at Club nights and other special events. If you would like to contribute as a committee member please get in touch as we have a very busy year ahead and your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Confirmed Darwin Camera Club Events to put in your Calendar:

Darwin Show Photography Competition and Exhibition: The committee is working with the Darwin Show’s organising committee to finalise competition categories, sponsors and also in providing marketing related imagery captured during the event between 26-28 July. We’d love to see more members get involved, either in manning our exhibition space or in taking photographs of specific Show attractions. It’s a fun event with lots of opportunities for developing your creative photography skills and techniques. We will also organise a group outing or meet up at the event.

Corroboree Billabong: The Club travels to Corroboree Billabong in August (Dates TBC) for a Nature Photography weekend (1-2 Days). Spaces will be strictly limited as the boat is only so big, so unless you’d like to paddle alongside in your own inflatable kayak (not recommended) be sure to confirm if you’re interested in joining. Further details to be provided soon.

Launch of new Website and ‘Beyond the Lens’ Newsletter:

As an integral part of the Club’s 2024 business and marketing plan, I am proud to announce the launch of our new website: https://darwin.myphotoclub.com.au

The MyPhotoClub platform enables us to create event schedules and photographic competitions for members – both within our club and interclub across the wider network of clubs around Australia.

We’re also thrilled to launch this first edition of the ‘Beyond the Lens’ monthly newsletter.

The Club’s monthly newsletter will include interesting feature articles on a range of photography topics as well as tips and tricks to assist members in developing their creative and technical skills. Members will be able to keep updated on upcoming workshops and seminars, group outings and events. Stay tuned over the year as we share captivating photography related news, workshops and events throughout the year. All members are encouraged to contribute to the club’s blog content.

Club Nights:

The Darwin Camera Club is reintroducing digital images critiques and competitions based on Set Subject and Open categories in our regular monthly meetings starting March 2024, along with other initiatives including portfolio development and photography workshops including analogue film throughout the year.

  1. Guest Presenters: We have a sensational list of local photographers locked in for this year: (Kyffin Lewis, Steve Lock (me), David Bradley, Matt Green, Ben Ward) and interstate (Mark Rayner – Trek About Photography) presenting a variety of genres including Landscape, Wildlife, Nature and Macro, Drone, Architecture, Underwater, Portraiture, Travel & Lifestyle and B&W Film. Stay tuned as we announce more presenters.
  • 7th February Club Night – Set Subject Theme: Our February non-competition club night theme will be ‘Travel and Lifestyle’ so bring along your flash drive and share you 10 best images from your recent travels and activities over the holiday period. This will be an opportunity for all to share what they’ve been up to since last November.
  • 7th February Club Night Guest Presenter – David Bradley: In November last year, our very talented club member David Bradley presented some of his wonderful rodeo images, and also his work with the Darwin Ballet. His presentation was so well received that we insisted he come back and share with us more of his work, along with some tips and techniques.

David Bradley (@DavidBradleyImages) has been an active photographer for more than 15 years and semi-professional for the last 3 years.

Most of his photography revolves around a wide range of sports, dance, and more recently event photography.  Some of his favourite sports photography include AFL, Soccer, Polocrosse, Show Jumping, Moto Cross, Quad Bike Racing, Judo, and Ballet.

David will be presenting a range of his sports photos and sharing tips and techniques to help you maximise your hit rate for action photography.
